My last air purifier, a Koios unit equipped with a HEPA filter and a cool nightlight, proved to be quiet, effective, and extremely attractive. My love affair with this device, however, ended suddenly when it came time to replace the filter. While readily available, the purchase price was far higher than I anticipated.

I decided to buy a new air purifier, concentrating on units boasting low-cost maintenance. Inexpensive USB powered units were available, but I doubted they would prove useful in any but the tiniest of rooms.

As I increased my price range, I came across the Levoit LF-H126. Its specifications were roughly equal to that of my old Koios air purifier, but replacement filters could be purchased for half the price. This worked for me.

The Levoit personal air purifier weighs in at 4.8 pounds. It is 6.75 inches wide, 10.5 inches high, and 8 inches deep. This device is powered by AC and equipped with a six-foot cord.

Air, sucked in through the air purifier’s rear cover, is forced through a prefilter and a HEPA/activated charcoal primary filter. Once the clean air reaches the front of the device, it is deflected to the sides.

A knob, located below the front panel, turns the unit on and allows it to be set to one of three speeds.

The rear cover incorporates a date wheel, which can be set to remind the owner to replace the primary filter at the appropriate time. Replacement filters can be purchased for $12.99.

The Manufacturer

Levoit is trademarked by Yoowo Co., Limited. This company is based in Hong Kong.

Visual Appeal

My old Koios air purifier was designed to attract attention. Levoit chose the opposite route, providing an unobtrusive white box with a fabric-covered front panel. Rather than draw the eye, this air purifier is designed to fade into the background.

Filtration System

The prefilter is a thin sheet of foam impregnated with activated charcoal. Its purpose is to trap larger particles within the air. While washable, this action would remove any benefit derived from the activated charcoal.

The primary filter is book-shaped, one side packed with tiny particles of charcoal which have been treated with oxygen. This procedure opens the pores of the carbon atoms, increasing their surface area and allowing these particles to absorb copious amounts of gas and odors.

The other side of this unit contains a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter. Air is forced through a fine mesh that traps harmful particles.

This system from Levoit removes 99.97% of dust, pollen, smoke, odor, allergies, mold spores, and pet dander.

The Levoit personal air filter can purify the air of an area of up to 15m² (161 ft²). A room that measures 12 by 13 feet—the size of my living room—can be handled effectively.

My office is one third the size of the living room. With the fan set to the middle position, this air purifier efficiently sucks up the smoke from my forbidden cigarettes.

Noise Level

This device is whisper quiet at low speed. In the medium position, it is louder but will not bother most people. High speed is quite noisy and would typically be used only in larger rooms when several people are smoking.

If properly maintained, this air purifier will last for many years. Prefilters should be changed every three months, and the primary filter is rated for six to eight months.

Overall Impression

I use this device in my office. It stands in the corner, unnoticed and unappreciated, dragging in and filtering cigarette smoke. I can’t ask for more than that. The Levoit LV-H126 air purifier is recommended.
